Enniskillen has a lot of history to the centuries old town. Hugh Maguire first constructed Enniskillen Castle in the early 15th century so he could command the Erne. The Castle saw many. Many battles in the time of the Gaelic rebellions and then fell after only an eight-day siege in 1594. The castle under went some reconstruction in 1607 under the guidance of William Cole. Then over time and more conflicts, it was renovated again in the 18th century, this time they were the Castle Barracks. Today, the castle is owned by Fermanagh County Museum.

There are other great things to see in Enniskillen. There are many old churches that are pretty old. Take for example, St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church. This church was built in 1870 through 1875, this is a French style Gothic Revival Church that was designed by a man named John O’Neill, and he was one of the premier architects in the 19th century.

Then there is the St. Macartin’s Church of Ireland Cathedral and a Graveyard. The church is built against the 1637 tower of a church that was previously built there in the 1600’s. Thomas Elliot and the church officially open in 1842 designed the church.

Located on the outside of Enniskillen is the Castle Cole, this castle is the family home of the Earle or Belmore and one of the treasurers on the board of the National Trust. You can walk the grounds and see the servants’ living spaces; you can see the beautiful staterooms and the furnishings. The castle is something you don’t want to miss.
