This beautiful island is located in the Lower Erne, just north of Enniskillen, County of Fermanagh, and Northern Ireland. The island is almost set up north and south and it is approximately a quarter mile long and about two thirds of mile wide. Though Devenish is very small it houses of the best monastic sites in all of Northern Ireland. The round tower has been dated back to the 12th century is also located on the island.

The walls of the Oratory of the Saint Molaise, he established the monastery in the 6th century, he was on a pilgrimage route going to Croagh Patrick located in the County of Mayo. It has burned down in 1157 but it later came back as the beautiful site of the parish church.

The earliest building here is the St. Molasie House, which is actually a very small church, and a rounded tower is close by. They were both built in the 12th century. The tower is about 100 feet tall and can be accessed by a staircase located inside. The lower church called the Teampull Mor has been dated back to the 13th century, the Teampull Mor has a molded south window and it was later lengthened in the 1300’s and later on, centuries later there were more additions made to it.

There are several hundred architectural pieces that are loose on that site today, there are over 40 stone pieces from the church. When you visit the structure you will be able to see them. You can get the ferry at Trory Point located outside Enniskillen.
