Crom Castle is set off the waters of the Upper Lough Enre in the County Fermanagh, the castle is owned by the National Trust along with Castle Coole. The estate as it is more commonly called has 1900 acres and it has the largest surviving area of oak in Northern Ireland. It also has one of the most important freshwater habitats on the British Isles.
The wildlife at Crom is in abundance including two rare butterflies, the purple hair streak and wood white and the elusive pine marten. There are also many historical buildings that adorned the castle and give the landscape an old time historical look. Some of the buildings are the Old castle, the Churchton Tower and the Crom Church; the castle is not open to the public.
In the Visitor Centre, you can see an exhibition on the history of the castle and a history of the wildlife. There is a lecture room and a Little Orchard Tea Room, a small gift shop and seven self-catering cottages. There are fishing trips and you can hire a boat to take a tour.
Though the Castle is closed to the public, there are many things to see on the estate. You can see the Castle itself from the outside. There are other small buildings you can see and the beautiful Lough Erne. If you are in Enniskillen , you don’t want to miss this. It is a beautiful sight nonetheless.
